The government is open to feedback on its discussion paper around tenancy laws. The aim is to strike a better balance between tenants and landlords. I discuss some aspects of it with the editor of the NZ property investor magazine here. Apologies for the quality of the video, will be better next time.

Pets
The government wants more pets in houses. A landlord may have to give reasons if they refuse a tenant due to pets. A pet bond or repair cap could be part of this.
Term
The government would like tenants to have at least 90 days to vacate a property, even if the landlord is selling or moving into the house. Fixed term tenancies could have a minimum of two years.
Renovations
Could it be ok for the tenant to renovate the home with notification instead of a request for permission? Perhaps if they modify it back once they return the home?
